The Clay City Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. members, the Chief, and the Chief’s Officers are strictly volunteers; no one gets paid for their services. They attend training and go to scenes on their own time when available. The fire department has an average of 20-30 members. All members have 2 years from hire date to gain their certification. As of March 2007, our station has the following equipment:

• 2 engines
• 1 ladder truck
• 1 brush truck
• 1 tanker truck
• 1 heavy rescue truck
• 1 Rehab
• 1 Suburban
• 1 rescue boat

The Clay City Volunteer Fire Department, Inc covers the western 1/3 property area of Powell County, including the incorporated city limits of Clay City. The property description for the covered territory is as follows:

Commencing at the fire department station on Twelfth Street, to the west along all highways, roads, and routes of travel and stopping at the Clark County line. To the south, along routes of travel and stopping at the Estill County line. To the north along all routes and stopping at the Montgomery County line. And to the east toward the city of Stanton stopping at the Red River on Beechfork Road including the Beechfork water treatment plant and reservoir. And to Highway 15 toward Stanton to Hatton Creek Road on the Mountain Parkway to the 20 mile marker.

The Clay City Volunteer Fire Department provides many services to the citizens of Clay City and Powell County. Some of the services we provide are as follows:

• Residential fires, which are fires in structures that are used for living purposes
• Commercial fires – fires in any type of business, such as a school, grocery store, factory, hotel, etc.
• Vehicle fires
• Dumpster fires
• Brush fires
• Vehicle extrication
• Fire Safety lectures in schools

In the case of vehicle extrication, the fire department may use the Jaws of Life to extricate the victim. However, if the vehicle is on top of the victim, air bags are used to lift the vehicle off the victim. Clay City is the only department in the county with a set of airbags. Crew also does a full inspection of the vehicle in the accident to ensure the vehicle is disabled from any explosions that may occur from gas leaks or other similar issues.

Fire Safety can never be overrated. It is our number one goal to serve our community to make it a safer place.
